The South Korean government has designated Monday, Aug 17, 2020 as a temporary national holiday, this decision was approved Tuesday at a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Moon Jae-in at Cheong Wa Dae, Seoul.

The National Liberation Day that falls on Saturday, Aug 15 influenced the decision. The President expressed how this post-weekend holiday would allow workers throughout the nation to have three consecutive days off during the summer season.

Unlike last year, two national holidays this year fell on a non-working day, leading the government to consider this fact as well.

The extended holiday is made in hope to help both citizens and medical staff who were exhausted by the drawn-out fight against the novel pandemic. President Moon described it as a “short but precious rest time” for those who need it in this crucial period.

According to the Prime Minister, Chung Sye-gyun, “[an additional day-off] would provide ordinary people and medical staff with a break, as well as help in boosting the coronavirus-hit domestic economy.”

It is worth noting that South Korea has one of the largest and fasted delivery services for all kind of food and products, for this matter, the president marked during the same meeting August 14 as a “Delivery-free Day”, to give some rest for delivery workers who suffered from the overwork over the first half of 2020.

The temporary day-off would help maintaining the trend of recovery in domestic demand.

The Prime minister has also revealed that the government is considering reopening public facilities, galleries and libraries starting from July 20, announcing, “Quarantine guidelines will have to be strictly abided by, like limiting the number of people in, mandating the use of masks and using electronic entry logs”.
